Sakuraphon🍒 New Release Announcement 🎹 Gertrude Meller (1879–1945) 💿 "The selected British Homochord Recordings" Pre-Orders Now Open "Vladimir de Pachmann in a dress" We are delighted to announce the forthcoming release of a remarkable 2-CD set devoted to the British pianist Gertrude Meller (1879–1945). Born in Bedford, England, Gertrude Meller studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music in London under Francesco Berger (1834–1933), the distinguished pianist and composer who had himself been a pupil of Ignaz Moscheles. In his memoir Reminiscences, Impressions and Anecdotes (1913), Berger singled out Meller and Dadine Sutherland as two of his finest pupils. Meller made her debut recital in Bedford in 1900, performing a programme that included Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C minor and Chopin’s Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante. In 1905 she appeared in Rubinstein’s Piano Concerto in D minor at the Guildhall School, and the following year repeated the work at a Promenade Concert in London’s Queen’s Hall under Sir Henry Wood. She continued to perform regularly in London, particularly at the Aeolian Hall, before returning to her native Bedford after the First World War, where she combined teaching with occasional concert appearances and radio broadcasts until declining health brought her public career to an end in the mid-1930s. With one exception, all the Homochord records included in this album were made in 1922–23 using the acoustic recording process. Within the classical piano catalogue of the distinguished British Homochord label, Gertrude Meller stood alongside Leo Sirota as one of its principal artists. Indeed, she actually recorded more titles for the company than Sirota, reflecting the importance she held within the label's catalogue. Meller’s pianism belongs to the great Romantic performing tradition, where inspiration and spontaneity take precedence over literal fidelity to the printed score. To my ears, her playing recalls the highly individual artistry of Vladimir de Pachmann and Mark Hambourg, with its freedom of phrasing, poetic imagination, and improvisatory spirit. In the famous Minute Waltz, for example, she introduces ornamental figures remarkably similar to those heard in Pachmann’s early G&T recordings, preserving performance practices that have all but disappeared today. Just as Guiomar Novaes was once affectionately described as "Paderewski in skirts," one might equally think of Gertrude Meller as "Vladimir de Pachmann in a dress"—a pianist whose performances combine poetic refinement with irresistible spontaneity. The programme presented here reflects the repertoire that flourished in recital halls and musical salons during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Alongside Chopin are works by Chaminade, Godard, Moszkowski, Poldini, Rubinstein, Liszt and many other composers who were once central to the pianist's repertory but are seldom encountered today. Many of these recordings appear here for the first time since their original release, making this album not only the long-overdue rediscovery of a remarkable British pianist, but also an invaluable document of a lost tradition of Romantic piano playing.
