His compositions are strongly influenced by American idioms such as ragtime and boogie-woogie—a bold approach that was often regarded as unorthodox by the classical establishment of his time. Particularly noteworthy is his “Boogie Woogie Concert Study”, a virtuosic and entertaining encore piece that belongs in the same category as works by Morton Gould. This sparkling miniature captures the audience with its vibrant, show-stopping flair. Schramm’s jazz-inflected sensibility evokes the pioneering spirits of musicians like Leon Kartun, Erwin Schulhoff and Max Darewski. His piece “Musical Box” is a truly charming work that blends the playful essence of Scott Joplin’s ragtime with the delicate lyricism reminiscent of Russian composer Anatoly Lyadov. Shortly after the war, Schramm performed this piece on radio broadcasts not only on piano but also using the celeste, leaving a vivid and delightful impression on listeners of the era. In a radio concert recorded in 1947, Schramm improvised variations on thematic material, engaging directly with his audience through his spontaneous interpretations. Though some critics dismissed such practices as frivolous deviations from the classical tradition, it was precisely this sense of freedom that defined his artistry and embodied the pure joy of music-making. During the 1930s, Schramm also left behind recordings of piano duets with his wife, Diny. At least two double-sided 78 rpm discs were released by German ELECTROLA label, featuring popular arrangements of jazz, foxtrots, and marches. These recordings reveal yet another facet of Schramm’s multifaceted musical personality. For this CD, we have included all surviving sides except two that were regrettably marred by surface cracks.
