"Julian von Károlyi : Chopin & Liszt - DG 78rpm Recordings (1943~1954)" Julián von Károlyi (1914–1993) was born in Losonc (today Lučenec, Slovakia) and studied piano with Josef Pembaur in Munich, Max von Pauer in Leipzig and later with Alfred Cortot in Paris, also receiving guidance from Ernst von Dohnányi. A prizewinner at the 1932 Chopin International Competition, he went on to establish an international career distinguished especially by his interpretations of Chopin, Liszt, and French repertoire. This CD features some of Károlyi's most representative early recordings, made for Deutsche Grammophon between 1943 during World War II and around 1954, and they are valuable sources for understanding his style of performing Chopin and Liszt works. In his youth, Károlyi was distinguished by a brilliant touch, light and agile fingerwork, refined and aristocratic phrasing, and a supple, whimsical sense of rhythm. His early recordings reflect these qualities in the repertoire he chose.
From Chopin, he recorded the melancholy Nocturne No.1 in B-flat minor, Op.9-1 and Nocturne No.7 in C-sharp minor, Op.27-1, the sensuous Berceuse in D-flat major, Op.57, the grandly declamatory Ballade No.1 in G minor, Op.23, and the complete Impromptus in unusually brisk tempos.
