Jacques Dupont — The Resonance of an Era Through a Pianist–Composer Among the many remarkable musicians who shaped French musical life during the first half of the twentieth century, a surprising number have remained overshadowed by more celebrated names. One such figure is Jacques Dupont (1906–1985). Educated at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSM), Dupont achieved national recognition in 1931 when his cantata L'ensorceleuse (The Enchantress) was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for Composition by unanimous decision. Although widely regarded as one of France's most promising young composers, his artistic gifts extended far beyond composition. Having studied piano from an early age under the legendary Lazare-Lévy, Dupont inherited the refined traditions of the French piano school. His performances combine technical brilliance, architectural clarity, and the profound musical insight of a gifted composer. This release presents the complete French Pathé piano solo recordings, originally made between 1931 and 1934 on 78rpm discs. These rare performances constitute an invaluable document of Dupont's artistry as a pianist and, very likely, represent the first complete collection of his solo recordings ever issued. The repertoire spans Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Albéniz, Debussy, Czerny, and Schubert, reflecting both the breadth of the French pianistic tradition and the comprehensive musical education expected of its finest musicians. To complement these historic recordings, this edition also includes a carefully selected group of later French Decca LP recordings in superior sound quality, offering a fascinating glimpse of Dupont's mature artistry. Following the Second World War, Dupont devoted much of his career to music education and cultural administration throughout France. Yet his passion for both performance and composition never diminished. Today, his recordings reveal not only an exceptional pianist, but also an overlooked chapter in the history of French piano playing.
