“The Complete Recordings of Georges de Lausnay”
A hidden gem of the French music world—resplendent piano recordings revived Georges de Lausnay (1882–1964) was a pianist, educator, composer, and conductor who played a diverse and influential role in the Parisian music scene of the early 20th century. This CD marks the first comprehensive reissue of nearly all of his surviving recordings. The 78 rpm records released by Pathé between 1928 and 1930 feature Romantic and modern masterpieces by Chopin, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, and Liszt, alongside Spanish-inspired works by Granados, Séverac, Turina, and Falla. De Lausnay’s refined touch and elegant performances—hallmarks of the French piano tradition—shine with a brilliance that perfectly matches the luxurious Art Deco design of Pathé’s prestigious “Pathé-Art” series. Among the highlights are two rare vertical-cut recordings: Am Springbrunnen by Albert Zabel and Dizzy Fingers by Zez Confrey. The former, originally written for harp, is believed to have been arranged for solo piano by de Lausnay himself; the latter serves as a striking example of the jazz influence that permeated French music during that era. Also included is a 1930 four-hand recording with his wife, Lucie de Lausnay, a rare female pianist of her time, best known as the model for Berthe Morisot’s 1892 painting Lucie Léon at the Piano. Her performance adds a unique historical and artistic depth to this collection. In 1957, during his later years, de Lausnay privately recorded several pedagogical pieces and a presumed original Sonatina for the DISQUES PYRAL label. These works reveal his continued devotion to early music education and his tender expressiveness as a performer. His achievements as a chamber musician are also notable, including recordings with violinist Jacques Thibaud and performances of the complete Beethoven violin sonatas with George Enescu. Now, the delicate and poetic artistry of this forgotten master is brought back to life, offering a renewed appreciation for his musical legacy in the present day.
