Born 1892 in Russia, Nikolai Orloff is a famous pianist who studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Konstantin Igmunov and composition and counterpoint with Sergey Tanyev. He made his debut in 1912, and under the direction of the composer himself, performed the premiere of Glazunov's "Piano Concerto" with great success. Later, Orloff moved to Western Europe and played an active as a concert pianist. In the late 1920's and 1930's, he released Ampico's piano roll and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto and a small pieces of Chopin on UK Decca. After that, there was only an acetate board for performance activities and broadcast recordings, but no recordings. The performance on this reissued CD is a r a studio recording that began violently on an Italian minor label in the early 1960s.
